Work

Selected projects in critical AI and data literacy: a course, a workshop, a browser tool, and teaching exercises, with links to the live resources and their records.

This page explains selected projects: what you can do with them, who they serve, and where to start. Software & Data and Talks document the outputs in full.

Critical AI & Data Literacy

These resources treat data and AI literacy as critical inquiry. They ask how knowledge is produced, classified, modeled, and interpreted, and where those steps can be contested. Each resource serves a different audience: art and design students, researchers and GLAM staff, and historians. They are related entry points, not one curriculum.

All Data Are Local

Course

How do observation, selection, classification, and measurement turn the world into data?

A two-day block course in data literacy for Data Design + Art students. Students bring a dataset of their own and describe it critically. Teachers can fork the course website and adapt it.

Discrimination-Sensitive Metadata Practice

Workshop · in German

How do descriptions and classifications produce discrimination?

A 60- to 90-minute hands-on workshop for researchers and GLAM staff. A facilitator guide, slides, a metadata audit worksheet, and case cards let others run it without the authors. It builds on the handbook Diskriminierungssensible Metadatenpraxis.

Simple Topic Modeling

Browser tool

How do modeling choices shape the patterns we interpret?

Finds the themes in a collection of documents. It runs in your browser, and your documents stay on your computer. Two historical demos, Swiss newspapers from 1914 and Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), show a result before you load your own texts. A configuration file lets others repeat a run exactly.

Critical AI Literacy for Historians

Teaching exercises · English, German, French

How can historians critically assess AI-assisted research and its evidence?

Hands-on exercises on source criticism, documentation, and reproducible practice with large language models. Each exercise states its learning objectives, difficulty level, and time estimate.
